Only a couple of hours into 2004 and a storm already! Page 1. Andamooka, 5 o'clock in the morning after a moderate night of New Years celebrations was surprised to hear a sound like thunder. Thinking I was imagining things went to check it out just to make sure. There was lightning out to the east and it was distant, which is was a bad sign as storms rarely come from that direction so it was only going to get more distant. Still, the big, lone cell, wandering the open outback against the backdrop of a lightening sky was a opportunity to good to miss. Got in my old man's "Fourby" and drove to the eastern edge of town (which took about 1 minute - Andamooka isn't the biggest place). Set up and started taking pics. The spectacle was great. There were no other clouds around, just this one big mamma of a cb cruising the prarie. Against the dark blue night sky you could make out the silhouetted shape of the cloud quite clearly - but it looked even better when the lightning was lighting up the cloud revealing all its detail. You could see the bubbling cumiliform updrafts and the fuzzy anvil really clearly. Actually the photos dont do justice to how well the lightning was lighting up the cloud. Then on top of the awesome cloud being lit up there was some spectacular CG's dropping down on the back of the storm where the updrafts were cranking and also on the front where the rain and downdrafts were - as you can see in a couple of the pics. As the light increased had to drop the shutter speed and as such captured only the odd flash here and there.
